Small weddings

A small wedding has no official cutoff. We use up to about 50 guests, and the rest of this page follows that line. Type your guest count below to see which path fits. For what a 20 or 40 person day looks like, open the ideas sorted by guest count. For what it costs, start with the budget for a small wedding.

Your number stays in your browser. It goes into the link you copy as ?guests=, and nothing is sent to us.

List of small-wedding paths by headcount

These bands are our own decision rules, not an industry standard. We draw the lines where the planning work changes. Elopement and micro are about size. Backyard is about where you hold it, so it overlaps micro on purpose.

PathHeadcount (our rule)The first decision
Elopement2 to 10License, officiant and where to stand
Micro wedding11 to 50One table or a room
Backyard wedding11 to 50Can the yard hold dinner, and what if it rains

Table: small-wedding paths and the guest range each one fits (our decision rules, not a sourced standard)

  • Elopement. Two to ten people. The work shrinks to paperwork and one good location. Open the elopement plan for two, which includes the hour-by-hour day.
  • Micro wedding. 11 to 50 guests and a real reception with fewer vendors. The micro wedding guide sorts the choices by guest count.
  • Backyard wedding. The same headcount, held at home. It adds rentals, power and a rain plan. Plan the yard with backyard layout and rentals and size the tent in the tent size by guest count table.

How to pick in three questions

Answer these in order. The first one that gives a clear answer wins.

  1. Is the guest list ten people or fewer? Take the elopement path. Everyone fits at one table or in one room.
  2. Is it 11 to 50? Take the micro path. The size is settled.
  3. Do you want it at a yard you can use? Then add the backyard path for the venue. If not, a restaurant room or small hall works.

If your list lands near a line, such as 48 or 52, plan for the higher number. Tents, tables and food are bought in steps, and a late yes is easier to absorb than a late no. Above about 50, the ideas page, which goes up to 100, is the better fit.

Send this to your partner

Most arguments about size start because nobody has said a number out loud. Copy this and send it:

Can we agree on a rough guest number this week? Then we can pick elopement, micro or backyard.

For a planner or a parent who is helping, use this version:

We are planning a small wedding of about [number] guests. Could you look at the path and the first decision for that size and tell me what you would book first?

The finder above fills in your number and copies either note with a link that reopens the same result.

Questions people ask

How many guests is a small wedding?

There is no official cutoff. On this site we use our own rule: up to about 50 guests is small, 11 to 50 is a micro wedding, and two to ten is an elopement. A backyard wedding is a venue choice inside those bands. Past 50, use the ideas page, which covers up to 100.

What is the average wedding guest count?

The Knot's 2025 Real Weddings Study, covering 16,956 US couples married in 2024, put the average at 116 guests. A list of 50 or fewer is under half of that, which is why rentals, food and the timeline all change. The ideas page shows what that means at 20, 40 and 50.

Do I still need a planner for a small wedding?

Not by default. With a short guest list you have fewer vendors, so a checklist and a timeline cover most of it. Hire help when the day has two places or two deadlines you must be at, for example a ceremony across town while rentals are delivered at the yard. If one friend can stay at the venue with the timeline, that is enough.

Is a small wedding always cheaper?

Not per guest. Some fees are flat, so the total usually falls while each guest costs more. The small wedding budget page shows which lines stay fixed. Put your own numbers in before you assume savings.
